BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling style martial art popularized by the Gracie Family in Brazil. BJJ focuses on the use of leverage and positional control with the aim to achieve submission holds and chokes. BJJ is suitable for men, women and children of all shapes and sizes with a focus on technique over physical strength. Hertford Combat Academy (HCA) is an Odyssey BJJ affiliated gym under founder and head instructor Michael Russell.

The majority of our classes are Gi classes (the traditional uniform worn as seen in the pictures on this page) although we do also run some no-gi sessions. You don’t need a gi to take part in your first few classes and can wear shorts or tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt but if you plan to train long term and become a member then you will need a gi to continue participating. Speak to the instructor who will be able to help and advise you on purchasing a gi.

A typical BJJ class at Hertford Combat Academy looks something like this:

  • 10 min warm up and mobility drills

  • 40-50 mins of technique and drilling

  • 30 - 40 mins sparring or “rolling”

We understand that getting started can be daunting, especially if you have never trained in any martial arts before, but HCA is a friendly, relaxed and welcoming gym. Feel free to contact us with any questions or pop in and speak to the instructor and watch a session before giving it a go. Whether you want to learn new skills, improve your physical and mental health or compete, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an excellent way to achieve your goals. So get in touch and make a start today. We look forward to seeing you on the mats.
